    FYI The Grey Market, Bangkok

Nooooooooooo…. The “grey market” is not soi cowboy, nor does it refer to 99% of the mongers out there.

The grey market is the new car import business. The cars are mostly “high end” such as Benz, Audi, Ferrari etc. It is not the black market because it borders on being legal…. Therefore, the grey market.

There are many import companies in Thailand that can offer new high end cars at much cheaper prices than the car dealers.eg. you can buy an Audi TT for around 2.8m and the retail price from a dealer is about 4.6m

Reason for being much cheaper is simple - they pay less import tax because they are as dodgy as admin!

Some pro's and con's that I can quickly think of are:

    Pro’s
    1. Much cheaper than a dealer
    2. The specific car model or option package is not available from a Thai dealer
    3. You usually don’t have to wait for 6 months for delivery of the vehicle as it’s already in the showroom.

    Con's
    1. Some items such as the navigator/GPS are only good if you are driving in Munich or London because the local dealer is the only guy that can sell the vehicle with Thailand maps. It’s usually not possible to download the software.
    2. Warranty is much less than a dealer would offer…e g 1 year or 20,000km is common.
    3. The import company does not have the special machines or genuine parts (on hand) for servicing/fixing the car (I guess this can be resolved taking it to a dealer but it will be on the expensive side)

Have any of you guys had any experience with buying from an “ Arthur Daley/ Somchai Deemaak Car Import Company”?

hard to believe you can't work around the nav issue. Can't you order the CD from the OEM?

special equipment (available at the dealers) are required to update software to the car's heart

alternative would be to install a local nav system

Big issue when after 6 month you have custom officer coming to your place and ask you to provide tax documents. Going back to the importer is a solution but in accordance with Thai law you are responsible for it ... So "bad luck" or change cars every 6 months!
Not a good idea and remember that you are "Farang" so by default "wrong and rich"

Buying a car from one of these guys sounds about as sensible as buying an iPhone 4s from the top floor of MBK.

No. I've always bought a Jap. vehicle new straight from the Thai dealership.
