    Countdown 2012

Where to celebrate New Year's Eve in Bangkok
Ring in 2012 with rooftop drinks, family-friendly parties or riverside gourmet meals
By Than Rassadanukul 27 December, 2011

It's been a rough few months for Thailand, with the recent flood crisis affecting millions of people.

Many are now looking ahead to better times in 2012, so expect Bangkok to be jumping with New Year's Eve revelers. Here are a few of the most popular ways to celebrate.

    1. Hit the open spaces

At midnight, fireworks will be going off all over the city. To take it all in up close, there are a few free family-friendly outdoor events going on.

Now-synonymous with Bangkok New Year's Eve countdowns is CentralWorld's annual celebration, which has been named "Smile Up 2012" (BTS: Chidlom). Nearby, Siam Paragon is having its own "Make a Wish Countdown 2012" at Park Paragon (BTS: Siam).

Asiatique, a new riverfront community mall at 2194 Charoenkrung Road, is also having a festival and fireworks display, though the property doesn't officially open until April, 2012.

There's a party for everyone this New Year's Eve in Bangkok.

    2. Head for the roof

If you are in a really festive mood but don't want to get caught in the crowds, hit one of Bangkok's al fresco rooftop restaurants or bars for great views of the fireworks.

For something really extravagant, there's Red Sky at Centara Grand, Vertigo at Banyan Tree Bangkok or Sirocco at Lebua at State Tower, all of which are offering luxurious set menus and parties. Just be sure to reserve ahead of time.

For drinks only, there are also a few rooftop parties going on. LUSH is throwing one down at United Center in Silom, and as always, the grand party at Altitude at Imperial Queen's Park will be a good time. Both events will feature electro music and Carlsberg beer.

Another rooftop party will take place at Nest, on Sukhumvit soi 11. Expect plenty of international DJs, performances and light shows.

    3. Nightclubs

Pretty much every major nightclub in Bangkok will be having a New Year's Eve party featuring either bands or DJs.

Top picks include parties at the newly renovated Q Bar, Bed Supper Club, Club Culture, Glow and Narz.

If you're simply into bar hopping, Silom, Khao San Road, Thonglor and RCA will all be packed with New Year's Eve revelers.

    4. Restaurants

Plenty of Bangkok restaurants have special New Year's Eve dinners planned. Here are just a few options.

For fantastic views of the fireworks, the riverside hotels put on impressive gala dinners that offer up close views of the action at midnight. For example, the Mandarin Oriental has planned a massive "007" themed party that includes a riverside buffet dinner or set dinners at the hotel's restaurants. At midnight, the lobby will be turned into a disco.

Other top picks around Bangkok include an Indian buffet and party at Indus restaurant, champagne cocktail night at The Sukhothai or drink specials over at newly-opened contemporary Japanese restaurant Zuma on Rajdamri Road.

Partying on top of Tak dam to dismiss rumours

A New Year countdown party will be held at the Bhumibol Dam in Tak in a move to dismiss rumours of the dam collapsing on January 1.

"The Tak Countdown Festival will take place right on the crest of the Bhumibol Dam," Deputy Governor Woot Sittisurat said yesterday. "I want to assure everybody that the dam is safe."

Assistant director of the dam operations Sirichai Saengsuwan said the compound would be open to public after sundown for the first time so as to ease worries.

"Sometimes, people have so much faith in rumours that they ignore facts," he said.

According to him, the Bhumibol Dam is strong and durable enough to withstand an earthquake of up to 7.5 Richter scale in magnitude. The dam is currently releasing 45 million cubic metres of water each day because it is at its capacity.

"But the dam has been able to store water to the fullest of its capacity thrice before and there have been no adverse impacts," Sirichai said.

Worries among the residents in Tak was evident as some were seen leaving home to camp out at a hill nearby for the New Year holidays.

Elsewhere, people were in a celebratory mood, especially in the North, where people have been gathering to enjoy cool temperatures.

"Normally, we have 90 buses coming in each day, but today more than 170 buses have already arrived," Somnuk Hasassilp, chief of the Chiang Mai bus terminal, said.

Wissanu Arunbamrungwong, who heads the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Mae Hong Son Office, said all hotels and resorts in Pai were fully booked for the New Year period. In addition, he said, Mae Hong Son's Khun Yuam district had also drawn a huge number of tourists because the sunflower fields there were in full bloom.
