Patpong, Silom Road, Bangkok.
In the heart of Bangkok lies Patpong, one of the most vibrant and colourful areas of the city. The Patpong area covers a couple of blocks between Silom and Suriwong Roads, just down from BTS Sala Daeng. It is home to the city’s most popular and renowned night market, many fine shops, restaurants, five star hotels and the main draw of all, some of the city’s most boisterous adult nightlife. Patpong is home to one of the world’s most famous red-light districts, it is where Thailand’s Go-Go culture started.
Every taxi driver knows Patpong so simply saying “Patpong” will get you there. Note that Patpong is in one of the major business districts of Bangkok, so traffic in the area can be busy at times.
If you’re interested in shopping during the evening then Silom Road’s Patpong is the place to go. There is so much to see and do in the area, despite its infamous adult related features such as the infamous ping-pong shows. The area caterers mainly, though not exclusively, to foreign tourists and expatriates.
Patpong 1 is the main street with many bars of various kinds. Patpong 2 also has many similar bars. Next to these lies Soi Jaruwan, sometimes referred to as Patpong 3 but best known as Silom Soi 4. It has long catered to gay men, whilst nearby Soi Thaniya has expensive bars with Thai hostesses that cater almost exclusively to Japanese men.
In the Patpong area, and in the immediate vicinity there are many fine restaurants and places to eat. Similarly, there is one of the most popular live music clubs, Radio City here, as well as a popular nightclubs like Lucifer.
If you use some common sense and stay away from the ping-pong show scams and basically stay in the downstairs bars you will find Patpong is still far safer than many average Western city centers. It’s very well policed, there’s a tourist police office at the end of the road.
